A consortium between Gamuda Australia and Laing O’Rourke has been awarded a contract to start tunnelling on the Sydney Metro West project. 

 

The Gamuda Australia Laing O’Rourke Consortium is looking for an influential Safety Director to drive an accountable and positive safety culture on site, ensuring compliance with WHS regulatory, legislative and client requirements.

 

About the role 

  • Promoting a continuous improvement culture and implement best practice management systems in the workplace and on site to promote and ensure safe work practices.
  • Ensure the regular actioning of safety reports and carrying out workplace/site inspections as and when required.
  • Manage the development, implementation, and evaluation of the safety management system across project including policies, procedures, manuals and practices, and electronic reporting platforms.
  • Provide advice, information, instruction and training to staff and contractors on Work Health & Safety obligations, the safety management system, and relevant guidelines and legislative requirements.
  • Support the operational managers by ensuring a safety-first culture to prevent potential risk, and support investigations, near misses, breaches or breaches in safety processes and procedures.

 

Your skills and experience 

  • Relevant bachelor’s degree in Workplace Health & Safety or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a Health and Safety role in the construction industry within Australia.
  • Well-developed people management skills that encourage staff to perform at optimum levels without compromising on standards. 
  • Strong understanding of current health and safety legislation, procedures, processes, and best practices.  
  • Working knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 9001 in construction.
  • Proven experience working on Tier 1 projects, tunnelling experience is advantageous. 

  

Construction includes the delivery of 9 kilometres of twin, metro rail tunnels between Westmead and Sydney Olympic Park; excavation of new station boxes at Westmead and Parramatta; earthworks, utilities and connecting tunnels for a Maintenance and Stabling Facility at Clyde; a precast concrete segment factory at Eastern Creek; and a services facility, crossover structure and excavation to support tunnelling operations at Rosehill.
